Behind The Lens
Location
Image was taken at the parents home.Time
The was taken in April 2013 in the morning. I set-up beside the glass doors using as much natural light as possible. The was one of the few images that she closed her eyes appearing to be asleep. She didn't sleep at all during the shoot. We tried everything I could think of. It was just going to be what was going to be.Lighting
I use natural light as much as possible. If I have to i resort to a small LED light on my hot shoe just to fill in a little. I don't like to use a flash on newborns as it can startle them.Equipment
At the time I was using a Nikon 5100 with a 18-105 lens. This was my starting kit. I have since upgraded to a 7100 and various lens are in my collection.Inspiration
I love babies & loved what I saw from other photographers in the industry. I don't have a studio so I can't get all those beautiful & inspiring studio shots. However I approached it in another way. I don't want to just copy others I want to create my own style. I love taking images of families.Editing
I used Lightroom 4 on this image. I touched up the skin & reduced the redness as well as a little softening. I have since moved to LR5 & Photoshop. In my camera bag
Nikon 7100 with a 18-140 & 50mm F1.8D. I wanted to get away from some of the weight so I also carry a Fuji XE-2 with 18-55, 14mm, & 18-135.Feedback
Going in to do newborns takes a lot of patience I usually spend 2-3 hours & get about 30 mins of actual shoot time. It takes a lot of time to feed, & get baby settled. Its not something you can do in a hurry. I never book 2 sessions in one day as it will take as long as it takes. I don't ever put a baby in a position that it doesn't want to naturally go into. Parents can get stressed if they feel the baby isn't cooperating, I never let them feel this is happening from me.
