I noticed Bryce while he was playing football on campus at Columbia University. I was practically blinded by the way the sun was playing off his glistening chest and I knew I had to photograph him. I am so glad I did. He was a pleasure to work with and I got several wonderful shots of him. This however is one of my favorites.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Morningside Park in Manhattan. I always prefer to shoot early mornings because natural lighting works best for me. I always try to remain aware of how the sun is striking my subject.

Time

This photo was taken towards the end of our shoot, around 10 am . It was one of the last shots of the day before the sun became too strong.

Lighting

If you are getting to that point in the morning where the sun is becoming strong, just remember that it will create shadows on your subject, so try to work with them instead of against them. In this case I like the shadow it created around his eyes. It gives him some mystery. I also liked how the light played off of his muscles, so I kept shooting even though I knew it was getting close to quitting time.

Equipment

I took this shot years ago and can't remember if I was using a nikon or canon rebel or if this was when I was starting out and using a Kodak Easy Share! I had an editor tell me once it's not the equipment that matters, so much as the photographers eye, and as you can see, he's easy on the eyes!

Inspiration

I saw him playing touch football on the Columbia University campus. Well, actually the first thing I saw was this golden chest flying through the air and catching a football right in front of me! Then I saw his face and knew I had to photograph him. He had just recently lost 30 lbs and was shy about modeling. I had to convince him that he could definitely be a model and that he wold be in good hands. I am so glad he scheduled a session with me. To this day he is still one of my favorite subjects that I have photographed.

Editing

I played with the contrast a little and cleaned up a few blemishes, but pretty much did very little to the photo. He looked like that in person so really it was just a matter of photographing him in the right light and location.

In my camera bag

There is no normally for me. I have worked with point and shoots, cannons, nikon and cell phones. I will use whatever I have available at the time.

Feedback

Start early in the morning, remember to be aware of the position of the sun, and of course start out with a good model!
