Location
This image was taken on the Stirling bridge which crosses the River Forth in Stirling, ScotlandTime
This image was taken very late at night.Lighting
The lighting was achieved by the usage of the available street lighting. I saw an opportunity to introduce a subject in front of the light to get the backlight strong.Equipment
I used a Canon 6D with 24-105 f/4 L lens, Manfrotto tripod, Single flash of 530 EX speedlite and the exposure was approx 11 seconds.Inspiration
I was on the bridge and noticed the three streetlights at the North end. it occured to me they would be a fantastic source of light should there be a subject on the bridge. As the architecture lended itself to a bold, dominant image I went for the single male figure, as though blocking the way.Editing
I increased the sharpening slightly in lightroom, added a little contrast and deepened the blacks, cropped a little too.In my camera bag
My bag generally has: Canon 6D and Canon 7D cameras. 17-40mm f/4 L lens 24-105 f/4 L lens 70-200mm f/4 L Lens 50mm f/1.4 Lens 85mm f/2.8 Lens ND filters (ND 2,4,8,graduated and 10 stopper) 430EX II and 530 EX Speedlights, coloured gels. Intervalometer and radio remote trigger. Spare batteries for everything. Cleaning cloth, rocket blower. Torch, Sweeties or chocolate. Tripod (Manfrotto)Feedback
The key to this particular image was a model who can stand still for 10+ seconds. Location is an important factor, get the right location, compose for the final image, experiment with lights or available streetlight, also fill in flash, one burst was all this image needed to lift some detail out of the shadows. Patience and perseverance, don't expect to get it right first time, try different shutterspeeds apertures and ISO till you get the one that works for you in the location you are in. DOn't stop till you are happy and my one piece of advice - always but always review your images, each time, zoom in on your screen, be critical. Above all enjoy!
