Location
I took this image just outside the town of Dunmore in Scotland. My photographer buddy and I walked from the town toward the old ruins of Dunmore House and happened across this crop growing in a field. Normally you see these fields swathed in gold and the greens just appealed to me.Time
It would have been around 5 - 6pm in the day, We tended to start our walks around 4-6pm and into the wee hours. We often walked for a mile or two to get to our intended location and sometimes didnt even reach wherever we had set out for, that for me is the beauty of both Photography and friendship, you never know where it will lead, something will catch our attention and take us off the beaten path.Lighting
The image wasn't planned as such and it was something that organically happened. I looked toward the direction we were heading, saw the cornfield, it attracted me in it's stark simplicity and beauty and so I took some images. My friend basically gave me the "Don't know what you are seeing there" speech but he's previously taken some images of trees and I hadn't seen anything - we each have our own "EYE"Equipment
At the time my go to camera was a Canon 6D, the lens would have been my walkabout 24-105 f/4 L and I believe this image was at full focal length of 105mm. I used my tripod, a Giotto at the time and to capture the image sharp and still I shot this at 1/4 of a second.Inspiration
The field just caught my eye to be honest, I could easily have walked through to get to another point without so much as a glance but one thing I have taught myself over the years is to look in all directions when out, when I saw the green of the corn, it occured to me that usually it is golden brown and that also appealed to me.Editing
Most if not all of my images go through some post processing, it's part of my workflow to convert the RAW file initially and then pop it into Lightroom and from there decide on what I think the final image needed. In this case I believe it required very little other than a contrast and sharpnness tweak. In my camera bag
Nowadays, my bag consists of my trusty Canon 5Ds, and my backup 6D. I carry several lenses to give me focal range from 14mm to 300mm and I can rotate the lenses depending on my destination and purpose. I will always carry a 580EX11 speedlite and sometimes 2 of them, triggers and off camera flash devices, I take several filters just in case ND 2 right through to ND300, you never know what you will need. My bag also houses EL wire, Laser pointer, copious spare batteries and memory cards, Gloves, a rain cowel for the camera and cleaning kit.Feedback
My main advice is to be prepared and Experiment. Best tip I ever got was to never go anywhere without at least one camera, but if possible, be prepared, you may go out preparing to shoot at the beach and end up on top of a hill at midnight so make sure you have the equipment needed. Experiment with angles, speeds, apertures, hand held as opposed to tripod, try to learn what your camera can teach you! In this digital age I believe it's better to throw away 100 shots to get the few you want, so try different things but be ready to grab that one shot which sometimes comes along in an instant and as quickly is gone. Don't get bogged down with needing the best equipment as it can be a mire but rather, get what you need within your own budget. I've seen wonderful images from budget cameras. Most of all, explore, enjoy and capture the moment!
