Behind The Lens

Location

I had the pleasure of joining an event which paired photographers with aspiring and some seasoned models. It was just outside of Chicago, in July 2013. I gained tremendous knowledge, and some fantastic images for my portfolio that day.

Time

It was taken mid morning. More importantly it was taken after two short sessions with this model. As our comfort level grew I got a sense of how he moved and what he offered as a model. For the majority of my time with him he was aloof but engaging and confident.

Lighting

The lighting makes this picture. Bare bones soft box light. Black background and an extra dark shade behind him. The light filled the smoke.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS REBEL T3. ISO 800, EXP 1/320 sec. f/5.6 length at 131mm. The light was a box light, covered to mute color.

Inspiration

He was the inspiration. He made the whole shoot interesting. He use and E-cigarette so the "smoke" is actually a mist. Now you know that little secret

Editing

First in Camera Raw I upped the exposure some, boosted the whites to get the smoke clear and reduced the black to help take everything out that I didn't want as a distraction. I also increased the clarity to force a few of the lines out. I converted to black and white in Photoshop using a plugin called Nik software Silver effects pro, and excellent addition when you love b&w as much as I do.

In my camera bag

I do On Sight, often outside , shoots with families and kids, so I keep it light. I carry a Canon Flash an 18-55mm lens and a 55-250 lens for my DOF needs.

Feedback

One suggestion I made to him was to hold still, only his breath moved. The lighting was low so I held very still as well. I pulled him away from the background and stepped well back too. I actually used a large card to block any extra light from the side, as that's what I had at the moment I used a length of 131 to extinguish any detail from the background then when I boosted his image in post there were very few artifacts to deal with.
