Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Beaches in Toronto, Canada. I used to go running by the water almost every day and this spot really caught my eye. I remember thinking for awhile about exactly how I wanted this image to turn out, picturing the shot every time I went by, but on the day of shooting everything evolved in a way I hadn't predicted. Funny how things work out.

Time

We took this about an hour before sunset. Earlier that day the water had been full of sailboats but we managed to catch the last one in this image as it returned home.

Lighting

I wanted this shot to be all about balance. We only used natural lighting and waited until the shadows made each side of the image feel equally weighted.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon d5100 with a simple kit lens. No flash, tripod or anything else.

Inspiration

I wanted this shot to communicate movement through the paradoxical idea of equilibrium. Dance had been a huge part of my life when I shot this and it struck me as the embodiment of this idea.

Editing

A few light saturation/vibrance touch ups to make the colours pop and a bit of work on the colour balance to bring out the gradient in the background and it was perfect!

In my camera bag

I like to travel light, but I always bring an external flash just in case. I always have my Nikon d7000, 18-105mm and 35mm lenses as well as a couple filters.

Feedback

When I go out and shoot I like to start with an idea of what story I want my image to tell, but often it comes down to timing and being in the right place at the right time. Allowing the shoot to evolve beyond what I had expected is what made this image one of my absolute favourites.
