Behind The Lens

Location

Our daughter's college roommate (from Europe) wanted to see St. Louis. We went up into The Arch where I captured this image.

Time

This is one of my favorite images. I have this printed and hanging in my living room. It was dusk. The sun was settling and there was a crescent moon following. The St. Louis Cardinals had just completed on of the longest games in franchise history, so the stadium had just emptied and lights were still on.

Lighting

The lighting was a challenge since I was facing West and the sun was setting, but I also wanted to let the street lights and architecture lighting to play a role in the image.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D800 with a Nikkor 14-70 mm f/2.8 Lens. I shot this handheld and put the lens right up against the glass of the small windows at the top of The Arch.

Inspiration

All too often St. Louis is seen with The Arch as part of the skyline. I wanted to take a different approach and show the St. Louis skyline looking from The Arch.

Editing

Post-processing was necessary due to the extreme differences in lighting. I was able to isolate Busch Stadium and brought the exposure down to see more detail inside the stadium. I also needed to bring the exposure down on the sunset to get the moon to show up better.

In my camera bag

Currently in my bag: Nikon D800 and Nikon D610 D-SLR camera bodies. All of my lenses are Nikkor. They are: 14-24mm f/2.8, 24-70mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/3.5-5.6, Prime 50mm f/1.4, Prime 85mm f/1.8, 60mm Macro f/2.8, 105mm Macro f2/8, Speed Light SB900

Feedback

I shoot in Manual Mode and recommend this for everyone. It allows you, the photographer, the opportunity to try different settings with your f-stop, and shutter speed. Keep trying and don't get discouraged. I am self taught - along with some classes at the photography store that helped me get going. I am constantly challenging myself to learn more and try new things.
