Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in Kula, Provence of Eastern Cape, South Africa

Time

1:45 pm

Lighting

It was a clear sunny day. All lighting is natural. No reflectors of any kind were used either.

Equipment

I was using a Nikon D90 using a AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 G. This was handheld with no flash. ISO200, Aperture f/5, Shutter Speed 1/100

Inspiration

The children in this community were amazing. Everyone in the community had either been infected or affected by aids. This "jungle gym wasn't much. This little boy was barefoot, running on the gravel around the playground. He would put dirt on the paper plate and then climb up the tires. Once he reached the top he would dump the dirt back to the bottom. Then he would slide, face first, down the boards that were the "slide" and do it all again. The colors were so brilliant and the paper plate matched some of the tires. This was a quick decision but I am so glad I was able to capture the moment.

Editing

I did increase the saturation, vibrance and clarity

In my camera bag

Currently my bag consists of a Nikon D800 body. I have the Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8, Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8, Nikkor 70-300 f/4.5-5.6, Nikkor 50mm f/1.2, Nikkor 60mm Macro f/2.8 and Nikkor 105mm Macro f/2.8

Feedback

If I were to offer any advice it would be: Always be ready! When I put myself in locations and moments like this, I have learned to always have my camera in hand ready to shoot. I chose to shoot in Manual most of the time. This allows me to have greater control of the look of the image. The extent of post-processing for me is saturation, clarity and vibrance. I really strive to do the rest in camera.
