Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Huzzah Conservation Area in Missouri.

Time

I made sure to take this trip late at night for Comet Lovejoy. January 15, 2015. This was right around midnight and I was hoping to find the comet; I got a breathtaking night sky!

Lighting

A lot of people don't know the concept of "light pollution". If you look just above the horizon in this photo, you can see what almost looks like the sunset, but that actually city lights "polluting" the sky. Notice how you cant see any stars there? Well, bright lights hinder your ability to see more stars, so the further you get from the city, the better!

Equipment

I used my Canon 60D and a nice sturdy tripod! Used the 10 second timer as to reduce shake from pushing shutter.

Inspiration

I really wanted to get a shot of Comet Lovejoy, or at least take a trip out to the conservation area with little light pollution to see it. While I didn't get a shot, the views of the sky were just incredible!

Editing

The only post-processing here is smoothing out the noise and fiddling with the contrast and highlights until I was happy with the shot. When taking a long exposure, at night especially, its important to smooth out some of the noise. It interferes with the crispness of the stars

In my camera bag

I actually just upgraded my bag due to lack of space for all my items!! Right now it has the 60D, my 50mm, 18-200mm, and my 17-40mm. I also keep about 5 spare batteries, a car battery charger, a wall charger, a rain coat for the camera and bag, cleaning cloths, cleaning solution with q-tips, and my shutter timmer/trigger.

Feedback

Get away from the city!!!! The further you are away from city lights, the more stars you are going to see. There are actually a few maps to find a great place around you with little to no light pollution. TRIPOD! When doing a long exposure, it super super important to reduce shake. Play with the settings on your camera, find something that works for you and just keep taking pictures.
