Great capture. Love the colors here. I can almost feel the rays of sun coming through.

Location
This shot was taken at Pounding Mill Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway.Time
I was meeting my favorite landscape photographer for a fall color workshop on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This shot was taken at sunrise in mid October 2014. We were unsure as to whether or not the clouds were going to break enough to get any good shots. When we saw the clouds open up we started shooting away. The cloud formations that morning were spectacular!Lighting
While watching clouds move through the scene we noticed this large cloud partially blocking the sun. We decided to hang out as it moved and the result was spectacular!Equipment
I used a Nikon 7100 at the time with a Nikon 12-24mm lens and my (rather flimsy) travel tripod.Inspiration
I'd always dreamed of getting a beautiful Blue Ridge sunrise shot but before this trip had never had the opportunity.Editing
I lightened up the shadows and increased the vibrance a bit in Lightroom 5.In my camera bag
I have since switched to a full frame, Nikon D810 camera body and always carry the following lenses while shooting landscapes: Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8, Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8, Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8, and Nikon 50mm f/1.8. I also never go anywhere without my Lee ND and ND grad filters.Feedback
I learned a lot form my workshop that day. It is best to keep a very close eye on the weather forecast when shooting landscapes, especially on the Parkway. Some clouds are best but the best stuff happens immediately after weather systems move out or as they are moving in. Depending on the elevation, you can catch some magnificent shots in these situations if you are patient and stay a little longer than you think you should! :-)
