Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Gary Methodist Church before the roof caved in and they closed it off to the public.

Time

It was taken over the course of the day from 11am-2pm.

Lighting

We used natural lighting 100% to accomplish this shot.

Equipment

We simply used a basic Nikon D5000 SLR with 55-200mm lens.

Inspiration

The woman photographed inspired this photo. She wanted to be a bride. However, at the same time, coming from a heritage of arranged marriage; she was terrified of marriage. The position of her body is the weight of the concept as she tries to stand her ground and be the bride she wants, not an arranged one. The contrast of beauty and destruction gives the conflict inside her.

Editing

I did not do much editing on this series. It was natural light and we wanted to conserve the natural idea behind it.

In my camera bag

I usually have a Nikon D7000, Nikon D5000, a GoPro Hero3, an array of lenses, and memory cards. I'm not huge on tons of equipment. I am a photographer that climbs walls and trees and trudges into rivers so I try to travel light.

Feedback

Be willing to explore! Don't overlook a location. There is beauty in everything. However, When shooting during urban exploration always bring a friend and be safe. Gary, IN is filled with locations like this but it's also a very dangerous area for non-residents. Also, structures like this are tempremental. Also check your footing. It can save your life. Most of all, as a fan of natural lighting photography, know your camera. If you know your camera and principles of photography you can shoot in almost any conditions with minimal equipment. It's worth the time to study your art and never stop. You can learn something new everyday!
