Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on Lower Spring Creek Road, East of Rapid City, South Dakota.

Time

It was in the evening, a tremendous thunderstorm was rolling over our heads and I decided to chase it with my daugther. The first thing we noticed right away, while the storm was still over head was the amazing mammatus formation that developed directly over our heads. The amount of lightning was also staggering. We chased the storm for quite a while before I got the vantage point and composition I desired.

Lighting

What I find so compelling about the lighting in this shot is the transition from dark to light. The setting sun light up the enormous thunderhead on the right while the darkness of the storm and oncoming night seems to swallow the scene from the left.

Equipment

Canon 5D MII, 28mm -70mm Tamron len, tripod and a remote trigger

Inspiration

The storm was the inspiration, it was truly remarkable.

Editing

Panorama stitched together.

In my camera bag

Canon 5D MII, 70mm-200mm lens, speedlight, 28mm -70mm Tamron len, tripod and a remote trigger

Feedback

chase the storm, be safe and take the shots.
