Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Adelaide Zoo "Kangaroo and Wallaby Display". We (my wife and I) were allowed into the Exhibition with one of the zoo's handlers for a closer, one on one, experience.

Time

It was taken at around 2pm in the afternoon on an overcast day which made for flatter image, but in this case, for me, the contrast of the shadows would've have been a distraction.

Lighting

Not really. Open air enclosure, mid afternoon, with cloud cover. Light was good, not too harsh, and the subject "worked it!"

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D3200 with an 55-200mm lens. No tripod, or flash was used, because of terrain, and the chance of scaring the animals...we were asked not to use flash!

Inspiration

This was one of those "just happened shots" where I had the mother framed up, was about to take the shot when the joey's nose peered out. Waiting for a few seconds gave me this shot...Joey saying hello world, and mum looking like "oh no!"

Editing

really, there was only a little contrast and brightness done..probably could do a lot more, but I liked it with the rustic colours. Apart from that, there was a little cropping done to square the image.

In my camera bag

My kit is growing every day, as I use my camera for video, stills and if in trouble, audio work. So usually a tripod, monopod, filters, flash, torch, cleaning gear, 18-55mm, 55-200mm and a prime 50mm nikon lens. Also have a shotgun mic, and reflector boards as standard, but my "kit" changes for every shoot.

Feedback

As this was shot in the Zoo, my best advice is be nice to the handlers. I was allowed clear access to this inclosure...inside it, because the handler saw I was interested and wanted to get some interesting shots...It's who you know people!!
