This photo was taken at the North Pole. I took the photo from another vessel. I was there because of my job. This was indeed a once in a lifetime opportunity and an incredible experience to be in the North Pole and taking this photograph.Time
I remember clearly that it was at the end of the day. I was a bit tired after the day’s work. I came out of my room to feel the cool breeze of the North Pole. I was amazed to witness the color of the nature around me. The vessel ‘‘Nordica’’ was very close to my ship. The reflection of the sunshine made her look golden. She was floating on water but her top was frozen. She looked so beautiful that I could not wait to take the snap. I just picked up my camera and took one of my most favorite shots ever.Lighting
The North Pole is an amazing place. The days were very long. The sky used to be cloudy most of the time and we could hardly see a bright sky. But the weather and the color of the day used to change frequently. At the time of this snap, the sun was at its full golden color. The color of “Nordica” looked brilliant and amazing. Only imagination can show you such beautiful scenes.Equipment
I used a Nikon Coolpix P80 camera for this photograph. This was a straight handheld shot. I could not even take time to prepare my tripod, fearing the spectacular moment and the beauty of the nature could change at any time.Inspiration
My father is my inspiration for taking photographs. There is a story behind this photograph. My father had a Zeiss Ikon camera and he used to take lots of celluloid snaps of us when we were younger. One day he gave me his camera and said to me, “Young man, you may not be here in the world tomorrow but your work will remain, somehow and with someone. So keep yourself alive in others’ mind.” I can still hear those words and get inspired. At that time, I could not take good snaps with that heavy camera very well. But I was determined to take good photos one day.Editing
I do post-processing sometimes with my photos, but not always. To tell the truth, I do not like post-processing very much. However, when I do, I use simple software for that. This photo was taken by a Coolpix P80 Nikon, which does not have the raw format. You don’t get good results in post-processing without a raw format most of the time. With this particular photo, I only used a bit of touch up.In my camera bag
I usually carry a Nikon D5100 and D610 body. With these, I carry AF-S 50mm 2.8 1:1.8 G, AF-S Micro 105mm 1:2.8 GED, AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm 1:3.5-5.6 lens. I also carry a Bower Fisheye lens CS 8mm 1:3.5 and keep some filters in my bag. Photography used to be a hobby of mine. Earlier, I used to use “point and shoot” cameras only. As I became more interested in photography, I started to invest and carry more accessories in my bag. I am waiting for my Tamron 150-600 mm and Nikon 14-24 mm lens to arrive at any time. I don’t mind travelling heavy, so I like carrying most my equipment in my bag as much as possible. Recently I added a Nikon D810 , Nikon's 14-24 mm wide and The Tamron 150 - 600 mm.Feedback
The North Pole area is normally cold and cloudy. The days are usually very long in the summer and short in the winter. In summertime, the sun is visible for a long time and in wintertime, it’s just the opposite. The color of the atmosphere changes very rapidly, with or without the sun. Sometimes, there is heavy snowfall in winter with bright sun in the sky. The wind is also a big factor over there. To take good pictures, I believe one should be ready with all the different photography gears because of these rapid changes in weather, especially with unexpected bright sun and winds. So, to take a good picture there, remember that patience is a virtue! One has to be patient and wait for the perfect moment with photography gears. Most of all, I feel that dedication is the most important thing for anyone taking a photograph. Wish you all the very best for your endeavors in photography.
