Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a local beach soon after sunrise.

Time

I love to photograph sunrises and then watch as the sun lights up everything it touches. This photo was taken early in the morning when the birds were just starting to rise from the sandbars and take flight.

Lighting

The light was all natural, coming from the sun rising over the water. I love the way it hits the water and leaves a million sparkles across it. The godwits wings were also illuminated which looked very pretty.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 60D, 250mm lens, F/13, ISO 1000. Hand held, no flash.

Inspiration

I love photographing nature, so wherever I go, I try to be prepared just in case I see anything eye-catching. I was watching a flock of these birds on the sand, and had photographed a few of them, when all of a sudden they started to fly off. I was very lucky to get a nice clear shot of these birds, as I was still some distance away.

Editing

I don't like to play with my images very much, just a simple crop and a touch of colour with some saturation. A little tweaking with the sharpness to compensate for the distance and that's it.

In my camera bag

I am now mostly using a Canon 6D body and have a nice selection of Canon lenses. In my bag at the moment is a good for most things 24-105mm L IS USM , my 100mm L IS USM macro lens for bugs and butterflies, and the L 400mm 1:5.6 for birds and things in the distance. Also have a couple of CPL and ND filters, 2 spare batteries and a few SD cards.

Feedback

The main tip is to be in the right place at the right time. I personally love the early morning light for most photography, birds tend to be active and searching for food soon after daybreak. Although when photographing insects, I have found that they tend to be more active when the weather is warmer or there is a bit more sun.
