Behind The Lens

Location

In my living room.

Time

I believe it was mid-morning. I have the most beautiful light all day in the living room, so I can't remember the exact time.

Lighting

I'm very fortunate to have huge north facing windows in the living room that let in the most beautiful light. It's usually too cold to photograph the babies outside so I utilize natural window light when photographing them this time of year.

Equipment

Canon 5D mark iii and a 50mm, 1.2 lens while my husband held up our 8 month old baby in a standing position.

Inspiration

I've always loved baby rolls and we were blessed with twins (kids # 3 and 4) back in May. I wanted to document all the rolls before they start moving around and thinning out. The funny thing is that while I had been planning the shot in my head for several weeks the whole thing was set up, over and done within 30 seconds. My daughter was screaming her head off and my husband who was holding her up was wanting me to hurry so he could pick her up and comfort her.

Editing

Yes, I did quite a contrast bump to help bring out the rolls. There was also quite a bit of lint on the floor... as there usually is since we have 4 kids and a dog that sheds a lot. I digitally removed the lint to have more focus on the baby rolls and ruffles. The rug also had a slightly busy pattern which felt distracting so the patterned was digitally removed. The woven texture in the background was actually our coffee table. I liked the texture and decided to leave it in but just soften it a little with a very light blur. Finally, a deep burn effect was added as a vignette to further help the legs be the primary focus.

In my camera bag

I do have a collection of lenses but my camera bag is really not that impressive. My Cannon 5D, Mark iii is always strapped around my shoulder, usually with the 50mm prime attached. I have an 85, but it's not as nice as my 50mm lens. I also do have a great 35mm prime I bought while using my previous camera with a cropped frame. Now that I have a full frame camera, the 35mm is only really used in tight spaces. There's an external flash with a Gary Fong diffuser for emergencies... as well as a bag of wet wipes, also for emergencies. And, of course, reflectors.

Feedback

I guess I would say go in close, and then go in closer again. Look for good light and remove clutter in the background.
