The matching colors of the cat and the wood with snow are great!

He's a handsome old cat, and he loves to pose for me :-)

Behind The Lens

Location

This was in my front yard. My old cat used to follow me around as I took photos. He was perched on the woodpile, watching me.

Time

This was near sunset on a clear winter day. 6:02 pm in March.

Lighting

I was trying to capture the beautiful late afternoon lighting. In winter it's a little cooler, more of a salmon colour. Beautiful on snow!

Equipment

Shot with a Samsung NX1000. 20-50mm zoom set at 38mm. Handheld. No special equipment.

Inspiration

I'd been reading about the light just before sunset. My goal was to try to do some sort of landscape. But as usual, my old cat distracted me with this wonderful pose. He had rather amazing, faceted eyes, and the light made him irresistible.

Editing

This was long before I had, or knew how to use Photoshop. I don't believe I did anything other than some minimal cropping. Possibly a slight exposure correction.

In my camera bag

These days I shoot with a Canon 7D. But at that time I was just using my little mirrorless Samsung NX1000 with the standard 20-50mm zoom that came with it. I had no other equipment. And I learned a ton with that little camera. It was also super portable, so I carried it a lot more than I carry the 7D.

Feedback

Look for the light! Early mornings, late afternoon/evening, sunbeams through clouds, etc. And be flexible. Sometimes you go out with something specific in mind. But if you look around and stay open to it, you'll see something completely different. Serendipity :-)
