Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at Weston-s-Mare's beach along towards Uphill.

Time

We have some gorgeous sunsets on the coast here at Weston-s-Mare, and this one didn't disappoint! I knew it was going to be an incoming high tide along with sunset, the combination of the two can make for a beautiful picture.

Lighting

As we know, the lighting from sunrise / sunsets is very different to midday light, more atmosphere to travel through creates the well known vibrant colours and hues only found at these times, along with the lovely colours cast into the water too.

Equipment

I used my D800 with a Sigma 24-70 f2.8 fitted with a Z-pro 100mm holder with a 0.9 soft grad and a ND8 filter. Mounted on a calumet tripod. A cable release was also used to eliminate movement.

Inspiration

As mentioned above, we are very lucky to have some beautiful sunsets here in Weston, so when I see the weather is looking good, I'm usually heading down this way to capture some images to add to my portfolio.

Editing

I always shoot in RAW, once uploaded, I'll usually process these types of pictures using NIK software within CS5, Its a fabulous package with everything anyone will need to create the most beautiful and stunning photographs, without it looking too edited! its a very powerful suite, but very subtle in its method.

In my camera bag

My bag consists of, D800, sigma 70-200 f2.8, sigma 24-70 f2.8, Nikon 50mm f1.4, Nikon 16-35 f4 Gloxy 990 speedlight, Calumet 7000 series tripod, 2 radio triggers, various ND filters, and a hitec 10stop, colour gels, loads of eneloop batteries. coloured torches for night photography, and all the other general bits one would have in a camera bag!!

Feedback

These types of images are not that difficult to capture! once you've understood the the exposure & speed settings, and how to use the relevant filters. Its just a matter of getting your wellies on, and experimenting with lots of pictures taken with slight adjustments to your settings. The thing that does catch people out at this time of day is, the speed that the light changes, thus affecting the exposure etc. But just get out there and practice, practice, practice :)
