Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Viana do Castelo, Portugal. This old pier used to have several small fishing boats around, but nowadays is just decaying.

Time

It was taken in the afternoon. I went there hoping for a nice sunset, but to no luck. The sky just became cloudy and gloomy.

Lighting

As i arrived the clouds were almost blocking the sky. It became a bit dark and colors were dull, so i immediately thought about a long exposure in black and white to atleast compensate for the trip there. The available light actually worked well with the long exposure, as the water became really smooth and evenly lit.

Equipment

I used my nikon d3200 with the 18-55mm kit lens, a tripod and a neutral density filter to achieve the long exposure time that i wanted.

Inspiration

I decided to take this photo after seeing some photos of the same pier and from the surrounding area. I wanted one taken by me. I went expecting to get a sunset shot but i actually how it all turned out. The place is very peaceful and the long exposure fits it's mood.

Editing

The photo was taken in raw format and i made the usual basic adjustments (exposure, shadows, highlights, sharpness), after converting it to a black and white. After that i did some dodging and burning to highlight some areas were i wanted the viewer to focus a bit more.

In my camera bag

I usually carry my nikon d3200;the 18-55mm kit lens; the 35mm f/1,8; neutral density filters; a polarizer and a remote timer.

Feedback

Go with atleast a concept of the photo that you want to make. I already have seen a few similar one and knew the spot. It became alot easier to setup everything. As another tip i could say to shoot some photos even the weather plays some tricks on you. Sometimes it works for the best.
