This herd of impala was taken in a forest along the shores of Lake Naivasha, in central Kenya.Time
Around the lake there is often an early morning mist - my favourite time of the day. This was taken at about 6 o'clock in the morning while out on a routine stroll to the lake.Lighting

More than the antelopes in the photo, I was most attracted to the light and mood of the scene. The impala herd was an added bonus.Editing

Since most of my images are made as a documentary on everyday life, I mostly have my 'handbag' camera with me at all times: a superb little Nikon Coolpix S9700 with a 30x optical zoom capable of capturing 16 megapixels. I am fortunate to live in Kenya, a photographer's paradise, so when I go out on safari, I take my Nikon D2H DSLR with two lenses: 70-300 mm for the wildlife, and 18 mm for the landscapes. My bag is packed with dessicant bags to guard against the humidity, a tripod, a reflector disc to paint light onto the dark African faces and a waterproof poncho so I don't have to come in if it starts to rain.Feedback
My greatest advice is to walk through life with hyper-awareness of your surroundings so important opportunities are not missed. An intimate understanding of how light changes throughout the day is an asset. Studying the behaviour of animal species in order to predict their movements helps to capture out-of-the-ordinary activities. Of course, there's always the element of luck - if you are observant and open to it!
