Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at a local park just near my house, we take the dog and my little girl down there most afternoons. It's pretty much just an open field with trees and bushes surrounding it so the dog can have a good off leash run around and I take photo's of the family while my daughter plays and my partner relax's after a hard days work. My daughter is very inquisitive and is fascinated in almost everything, this particular day she had noticed the little flowers hiding in the tall grass just near where we were relaxing and decided to check them out

Time

This was taken around 3pm, the usual time we head out down to the park. It was a really clear day and in the middle of an Australian Summer so the heat was terrible.

Lighting

Thankfully where this shot was taken, there were some tall tress around the area that created a perfect little bit of shade without decreasing any visibility. As it was a clear sunny day I was stoked my 2yr old and decided to do some exploring that wasn't in the blazing sun.

Equipment

I used a hand held Canon 700D for this photo with a 50mm F/1.8. I tried to keep my ISO as low as possible whilst boosting my shutter speed as my daughter is very quick so my camera needs to be just as quick. I can guarantee she only stayed like this for a second or less so I had to be vigilant.

Inspiration

I am always taking photo's of my daughter, as from a mother's perspective she is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. Plus, with her speed and attitude, getting a good photo from her proves to be a challenge and thus a good learning experience to photograph children

Editing

Yes, I used Adobe Lightroom to tweak to the contrast and colours a bit, as it was in the middle of Summer the grass had a very yellow, dry tinge to it so I wanted it to look a little more healthy

In my camera bag

I normally carry my camera, tripod, speed light, 18-55mm and 50mm, a wireless remote shutter release plus 2 variable ND filters and a CPL filter (you never know when you may come across a good water shot). A lense cleaner and a spare battery plus SD cards. These all go with me almost everywhere

Feedback

Photographing kids can be a challenge, especially around this age! They move quick and never look at the camera for long. The best advice I can give is to increase your shutter as if you're shooting sports and get down to their level. Move about with them and don't expect them to come to you and the camera. You must go to them and be prepared for them to run away. I often chuck my jogging shoes on and try to beat them to their next destination, this also makes it fun for them as they think it's a race and you will be more likely to get a smile out of them. Also, let them do what they want. Posing a child of this age can be very hard but by letting do what they want, if you are vigilant, you can capture an image that may look like they are actually posing for you anyway.
