Behind The Lens

Location

On the Grand River, near Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

Time

I think it was around 8:00 am. At this time of year (late summer) where I live, as the days are still hot but the nights get cool, I often see mist on water and low meadows in early morning. The morning I shot this it had been particularly hot the day before, with a dramatic dip in temperature overnight. There was so much mist rising that morning, I was able to spend a half hour shooting before heading into the office to work.

Lighting

I was forced to shoot where I stopped on the river bank. As I was on my way to work, I didn't have time to reposition for better conditions, even if I had wanted to. The lighting I found there was all I had to work with. In retrospect, I think it was ideal, though. The scene seemed to have a subtle back-lighting which worked well for the subject matter.

Equipment

I shot this with my Nikon D7000. I think the lens was the 18-55.

Inspiration

I was inspired simply by my constant desire to shoot as much as possible, especially things I have not seen before while I have a camera in my hands.

Editing

Very little processing. A touch of contrast enhancement, some saturation boost and a little bit of sharpening. I used layering and multiplying to create a little vignetting.

In my camera bag

Facetiously, I'll answer that I have "all of it" in my bag. Seriously, though, my shooting motto is, "It's better to have it, than to need it." I carry as much as possible wherever I go. Currently, I have an 18-55, 90mm macro and 150-500 zoom in the bag. I also carry things like a flashlight, notebook, small flash diffuser, filters, extra memory, lens cleaner, wireless remote, etc. It makes the bag heavy, but I usually feel ready to shoot whatever is in front of me.

Feedback

I would simply advise that you take your camera with you as much as possible. You never know when you might encounter a scene like this, and you'll kick yourself if you aren't able to shoot it.
