Location
I took this photo on the outskirts of the town I live in Wisconsin. I have a few spots I like to frequent when sunsets are looking interesting and this is one of my favorite.Time
This was an evening in late July or early August. I had stopped down near the fairgrounds in our town to take a few pictures of the fair rides that were being setup and saw the sky had some potential to be good with the clouds that were visible.Lighting
The lighting is all naturalEquipment
For this shot I used my trusty Canon 60d and the kit 18-135mm lens.Inspiration
I try to make my way around my town every so often and get some pictures of familiar locations during an interesting time (spectacular sunset, a storm, a clear night). The way the sun's rays were shining through the clouds are what caught my attention in this case.Editing
I brightened the foreground shadows and lightened the picture. I was focusing on the sky so the environment needed to be brightened up.In my camera bag
Since taking this picture I've upgraded to a Canon 5diii but I still keep my 60d in my bag. For lenses my main ones are Canon 24-105mm F4, a Canon 70-200 F2.8 USM ii a Rokinon 14mm F2.8 for night shooting and the kit 18-135mm for my 60d.Feedback
This picture was in a place I'm quite familiar with. I knew where I wanted to go when I saw that there was a possibility of a great sunset. My advice would be to always keep an eye out for interesting locations and keep different scenarios for different times of day in mind. Most importantly always have some gear with you, you can't take that picture you are envisioning if you don't have the tools you need.
