Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken off North Beach, Perth, Western Australia.

Time

I took this photograph at 3:25:27am. Amazingly peaceful with endless opportunities.

Lighting

It was a full moon and I used the ambient light to expose the scene. I did not want to overexpose the moonlight so chose f8 rather than a larger aperture. This further helped to smooth out the oceans movements over the 30 second exposure time.

Equipment

This photograph was taken with a Nikon D5100 using an 18-55mm f3.5 lens. Focal was set to 32mm at f8. Exposure was for 30 seconds at ISO 640. Camera was set on Manual with the shutter set on Bulb.

Inspiration

I was travelling the northern coastline of Perth looking for interesting rock features. I was aiming to photograph a milky smooth seascape when I noticed the moonlight and its reflection from horizon to shoreline and just had to try capture the beauty of it.

Editing

I processed this image in Lightroom 4 using white balance and contrast compensation to enhance the natural blues as well as noise reduction filtering to further smooth the image. Post processing crop to balance the image.

In my camera bag

I usually carry my Nikon D5100 with an 18-55mm f3.5 kit lens together with a CP filter and a variable ND filter. I use a Monfrotto Tripod and wired shutter control for Bulb mode.

Feedback

I follow the celestial calendar using the Photographers Ephemeris app and with the full moon noted I planned to do long exposure rocky seascapes using the ambient moonlight to expose the scene. The camera was set on Manual with the shutter set on Bulb. I set the focal length to 32mm at f8. Normally I would use a larger aperture but did not want to overexpose the moon but still wanted sufficient time to smooth out the oceans movements. My first exposure was at ISO 3200 which I use as a starting point and expose for approx 15 sec. The moon was too radiant and the smoothness of the ocean was still a bit rough so I dropped the ISO to 640 and extended the exposure to 30 seconds.
