Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Trinidad, Cuba.

Time

My favorite time to go out and make photographs is around golden hour. On this day, I had planned to hike a mountain with my friend and capture the sunset over this adorable little village. We spent some time walking around and making photos of the people who stopped to talk to us along the way. This was taken on March 24, 2014 at 6:20pm.

Lighting

The lighting around golden hour is my absolute favorite. It's so soft and inviting. I love that the light on the little boys face brings out his youthful joy.

Equipment

This image was shot using a Canon 5D Mark II with the 24mm f1.4 lens.

Inspiration

I love meeting and talking with people. It was especially easy to photograph the people in Trinidad because they were all so intrigued with what I was doing. My focus and style is in photojournalism, capturing moments and emotion as they happen naturally is what I love most. When I saw this young boy being pushed around on a bike by his grandfather, I immediately stopped to see what it was all about. This was the first image I snapped of that series and remains one of my favorites from the trip.

Editing

In post-processing, I simply color balanced and adjusted my highlights and shadows to make the child "pop" in order to add dimension to the image. I don't process most images beyond that point. I like to keep my images looking as true to real life as I can.

In my camera bag

The very first items to be packed in my bag are extra memory cards and batteries! I like to keep my load as light as possible when traveling so I usually stick to my Canon 50mm f1.4, 24-70mm f2.8 and maybe the 85mm f1.8 if I want a longer lens. Other than that, my 5D Mark III is my go-to body and a 600 ex-rt flash. (Though I try to stick to natural light whenever I can)

Feedback

When I photograph people, I like to get to know something about them before I ever ask to take their picture. Connecting with the people I'm photographing is what I love most about this art. Now when I look back at this image, I remember the sound of the child giggling as his grandfather pushed him around on the bike. I remember the pride in his eyes as he watched how happy his grandson was with his creation. I'm so glad I was present for that.
