Behind The Lens

Location

The Glamour Child was taken at home just before we set off on a family winter's walk.

Time

Early afternoon in January,

Lighting

Our hallway benefits from natural lighting from two directions: a glass porch door (behind the subject) and some French windows from the adjoining dining room (in front). With plenty of available natural light, it made sense to use it.

Equipment

A humble Fuji XF1 compact.

Inspiration

Our daughter (a teenager at the time) was last to get ready for our walk. The combination of her pinned-up hair and her grey faux fur coat gave a 1930s look that I figured would well in sepia. I already had my camera ready for the walk so asked her to stand in the middle of the two sources of light and, a couple of minutes later, I had the shot.

Editing

Yes, chiefly blurring the background to remove a wooden staircase and giving it the sepia treatment.

In my camera bag

I travel light; not even a bag. I usually carry an Olympus E-PL5 with an M.Zuiko 25mm (f1.8) lens with a sturdy wrist strap. And a spare battery.

Feedback

Every photograph should have something unique about it. Otherwise, why would anyone give it a second look? If attempting to capture something from a bygone era, ensure there's nothing contemporary in the frame to spoil the effect. Whether it's true or not, there's a story about a red sports car being visible in the chariot scene from Ben Hur. If a caption is required, avoid lazy titles.
