The photo was taken in Grand Central Terminal in New York City. During a photo tour we were able explore the glass walkways and get some photos of the main room from almost roof-level.Time
We were touring the Grand Central Terminal on a Saturday afternoon. This photo was taken around 4:30 EST on September 13th, 2014.Lighting
The lighting was the ambient light. Very poor unfortunately had me raise the ISO as I was not able to use a tripod here and I also wanted to freeze the people movements.Equipment
This photo was shot on a Canon 5d Mark III, EF16-35mm f/2.8L II USM handheld.Inspiration
I knew that if we get up there on the glass walkway there will be plenty of opportunities but limited time. While i was working to get a full panoramic view of the Grand Central Terminal I realized the nice symmetrical set up below at the Apple Store. The people engaged with the electronics on display, the patterns, the busy feel of the terminal they all came together. I waited for the right spot to be freed up by the fellow photographer and I slide right into it.Editing
Shooting at a high ISO will add noise and that is something I knew I will have to deal with later in post. I shot three frames to make sure that I can minimize the noise using the overexposed frame and bring back all the details in the Apple electronics using the underexposed frame. Color correction and some dodge and burn for the final touch. In my camera bag
I almost never leave the house without my Canon 5D Mark III and a set of lenses to cover everything from ultra-wide to super telephoto range. A wide angle lens EF16-35 f/2.8L II, EF24-70 f/2.8L and the trustworthy EF70-200 f/2.8L IS. Then depending on the shoot I go for I might add the TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II if I go for an architectural shot or the Canon 7D Mark II and EF 300mm f/4L IS USM or EF 400mm f/5.6L USM if I go for some sport action shots or my son's swim meets.Feedback
Grand Central Terminal is a place full of photography opportunities. From the Oyster Bar to the always busy main concord. Slow shutter speed to show the movements, fast shutter speed to freeze the shadows of the crowds. Low angle, from above, weddings shoots the creativity is endless once you are there. Make sure you get a tripod permit or join a photography tour to be able to use your tripod. Would suggest to go off peak time as the terminal gets really crowded. Weekends probably are the best. Enjoy it!!
