Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the Limavannet just outside Stavanger, Norway. The local waterski club have their racing track there and i had agreed to take some promo shoots for them.

Time

It was a lovely afternoon at around 17.00.

Lighting

It was a very low and yellow afternoon sun. The racing track was side lit, so in one turn i had a nice front light of the skiers, and in the other turn the skier was back lit. This photo, as you may see, is back- lit.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D800 with my favorite 70-200 f2.8 VRII

Inspiration

It was a series of photos and I was struggling with what to make out of the back lit turns. Either the water was burned out, or the skier was too dark. I saw the back lit water sprey made the skier stand out in silhouette and then it was just a matter of timing to create the picture.

Editing

The picture was converted to B&W and contrasts bumped up a bit. Post cropping was also done. I was surprised how fast these skiers move from side to side and to achieve perfect framing while following the skiers takes allot more training. Some post cropping for me was inevedeble.

In my camera bag

Now i have a Nikon D810, 70-200 f2.8, 50mm f1.4 and 24mm f1.4. For holidays normally travel light and only bring my Fuji X100S.

Feedback

Once again I was surprised how fast this sport moves. Hi shutter speed, minimum 1/2000, and manual mode was necessary. I was sitting in the boat and as the line to the skiers are the same length no matter where they are in the turns I tried manual/fixed focus, but hat theory failed me. I achieved more keepers with continues auto focus.
