Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken "in the bush" on my parents' farm in Namibia/Africa. The farm is my childhood home and the place closest to my heart in this entire world. The picture features one of my dearest friends who made the journey home with me from the States. -- It was her first time visiting Namibia and we were enjoying the sunset when I snapped this picture of her.

Time

Life on the game farm is busy. We usually get up at 6am and go bed late. The day I took this picture we decided to escape the business for a little while and drove into the bush to enjoy the sunset. We parked the Land Cruiser on top of a hill... a spot that allowed our eyes to see far beyond the borders of the farm and our usual horizon. I took this picture of her shortly after the last sliver of the sun had disappeared. I love this picture because I can see Namibia's vastness reflected in the expression on my friend's face. Even though she seems to look right at the camera it is evident that she sees much farther than that.

Lighting

Photographing in natural light is my favorite! It was a crisp winter evening; the light was soft and the perfect mix of cool and warm hues.

Equipment

I took this picture with my Canon 5D mark iii and the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

My friend is beautiful (inside and out!) -- she has a heart that is larger than life and the ability to make everything that she touches pretty around her. Sadly, like so many women these days, she often has trouble believing this. I picked up my camera and snapped this picture of her because I wanted her to see what I see.

Editing

I shot this photograph in RAW format and converted it to black and white using some very basic settings in Lightroom. The post-processing for this image was very minimalistic. I like to keep my subjects, especially when it comes to portraits, as natural as possible.

In my camera bag

I do not like to carry a heavy load so I usually only carry my canon 5d mark iii, the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens and the Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT flash (just for in-case) with me -- It's the perfect weight and (mostly) sufficient for what I envision.

Feedback

I would say Iook at your subject and ask yourself: What does God see in him/her? Then try to capture that.
