The Skidblander, according to the Edda Saga, was a magical ship made by the dwarfs, the sons of Ivald and given by them to Frey. It is large enough to carry everyone yet can be taken to pieces and carried in a coat pocket, The Skidblander always had favourable wind and could sail on both land and sea.
this replica ship was built entirely from oak except for the mast which is made of fir, she was built to carry a max of 36 crew and had 20 oars, she was built in the late 1980's and in 2000 there was a plan to sail her from Norway to America as part of the Mellinium celebrations, She got as far as Sumburgh Head where the winds and strong tide were against her, the crew anchored of Sumburgh for a few weeks waiting for favourable winds, but they eventually gave up and went home, The boat was taken to Lerwick harbour into a drydock but of course the harbour dues were never paid so the ship finaly taken into recievership and was then bought by Shetland islands council and towed to the island of Unst where she lies today.
