Location
This photo was taken on a summer vacation in Albania. Olive trees are so unique in profile and texture, I knew I wanted to shoot them.Time
This photo was taken near sunset. We were heading west through a couple of miles of olive fields when the sun started to set. This lone tree was on top of a small hill and the way it had started to bend and break gave it an ideal somber look.Lighting
Outdoors in natural light is all that's needed for a shot like this. I knew I would be taking it into Photoshop for the sky and turn the oranges that were already there into that dreamscape. The sun being behind the hill created a great silhouette that brought about the inspiration for the rest of the image.Equipment
This shot was taken with a Nikon D3100 with the Nikon 18-55mm kit lens. The gear captured a surprising amount of detail while handheld and stopped down to f8, but since high detail was never the goal with this image, the gear used to capture it was less important than the flexibility raw gave me in post.Inspiration
I like all of my images to present a type of scene or dreamscape. I wanted to present something ordinary as surreal here. This image was captured in the outskirts of Berat, Albania which is an ancient city that's always carried a somber tone for me. It represents the death and decay of a 3000 year old civilization so the ultimate goal was to convey a lone mourner standing away from some surreal burial.Editing
Post processing was instrumental in creating this image. The silhouette was accentuated in curves. Then the silk screen effect was created with noise and blur. Some gradient overlays were applied to hue itIn my camera bag
A Sony A7 and a Helios 58mm f2 are my primary weapons. I usually carry around additional SanDisk memory cards, a couple ND filters, and two additional batteries. I like to travel light!Feedback
The concept is key. Once you've got a strong concept in mind, it will transcend the image. Lighting, composition, and post should then all be applied to strengthen that concept, go from high level and work your way down to the details.
