Behind The Lens

Location

Ynysangharad Park Pontypridd which is my local park and birth place of the Welsh National Anthem.

Time

It was a cold winter evening around 6pm as the night was drawing in.

Lighting

The lighting used was natural light which came from the sun lighting up the moon against the dark sky.

Equipment

The only equipment used was a Fujifilm finepix S9200 bridge camera with a 50x optical zoom lens, set to apeture priority mode with an apeture on f11. No tripod was used to take the shot just a steady hand.

Inspiration

I have always had interest in astronomy when a child and thought how nice it would be to take photo of the moon and try to capture the details of the craters on the Luna surface. This is the first time I tried taking a photo of the moon and quite pleased with end result.

Editing

Yes only a little post-processing in photoshop to bring out the shadow and highlights, also used some noise reduction to take away the noise at moons edge where it meets the dark sky.

In my camera bag

I always take my Fujifilm fine pix s9200 accompanied with various lens filters ranging from Neutral density filters to a circular polarizer and a diffuser for the flash to stop harsh shadow on subjects.

Feedback

This was the first time trying to capture the night time sky, but what I learnt is that you don't need loads of equipment to be able pull off a shot like this. What is needed is patience and to experiment with your camera settings. The first couple of shots taken were done in colour but when looking at them in live mode noticed that there wasn't much detail, so I thought to myself why do I need colour in an image that has little colour, then thought why not try using B&W with end result quite pleasing. So if your not sure what you are doing just keep trying and think of what you want the end result of your image to look like then you will eventually get what you are looking for.
