Location
I know a guy that does haunted attractions for a living and when trying to find a place that would look dark and dingy and also keep us all out of the heat he offered me his space since Death Yard: Dark Decent had still been in the beginning processes of being created. It was an abandoned meat butcher factory of some kind and walls had been torn down, garbage was every where and it just worked perfecting with my twisted version of the drug lord White Queen.Time
It was a three day process where we all started at 9am and worked until about 3 or 4 in the afternoon. Alice I think was shot on the second day of my three part installation of Twisted Tales and it was by far the biggest with the multiple characters I recreated with my friends.Lighting
My mother just bought light boxes and was letting them go to waste, so I seized the opportunity to have fun with them. Throughout the entire shoot we experimented with different angles and ways to make the models look darker or even brighter.Equipment
I used my trusty Nikon D3100, I started using a tripod but than finally I gave up because I wanted to move around so much and with my Fish Eye lens (which is used in this image) I had to get really close to her face and the tripod would've gotten in the way the entire time. No flash just the one light box bouncing off the wall but also turned towards her face.Inspiration
I wanted to do a huge photo shoot with all of my friends before everyone went away for school. So we decided to do altered versions of lovable children stories like Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland and Willie Wonka (mind the misspelling of Willie for Copyright reasons.) In my though process of the White Queen I made it to where her and the Red Queen were sisters and on the same side. They were apart of a major drug cartel and I wanted to get an image of them both looking super gorgeous and elegant yet their surrounds falling apart while having Tea. Heather, my model, is also insanely photogenic and really made the roll of the White Queen so much more amazing to shoot.Editing
Yes I used Adobe's Light Room editing program to brighten the lighting, make colors pop and even dingier. In my camera bag
I don't have anything fancy. I work with a Nikon D3100 with a 55mm, fish eye and at the time a 300mm lens. I also use two light boxes on inside photo shoots.Feedback
Find a place that's already dirty and broken down and a good friend that owns it that will let you in there for three days for hours. I had a lot of friends to help with makeup and costuming and coming up with outside set pieces that really contributed to the outcome of this photo. I also have insanely beautiful friends that love having their pictures taken that are also actors and very able to naturally take on a character that I had edited for them to portray. Instead of telling what to do, they just did everything I wanted naturally. Having friends that also have the same types of visions as I do were also very helpful in the process. Fish eyes are also super fun to have when doing crazy photoshoots like this and are actually decently priced!
