Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Alberta, Canada. Alberta happens to be one of those privileged places in the word where the beauty and contrasting landscapes are everywhere!

Time

I took this photograph during the afternoon hours - 4:30 pm or so during a summer trip from Banff to Jasper on the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93 N.). It was a warning sight of summer rain showers on their way.

Lighting

The light was rapidly changing as the cloud cover became more dense. At one point the sun was nearly blocked an only a few rays of light made it through the clouds, I aimed for a spot reading of the further left of the frame towards the mountain base, and shoot several raw images with different angles and 1/3rd bracketed exposures.

Equipment

Handled, Nikon D700 and Nikon 24-120mm f35/5.6

Inspiration

The dramatic sky and tree envelope creating natural leading lines towards the peak.

Editing

I used Lightroom to post process. RAW adjustments to recover some highlights, adjusted color and contrast. Then to Nik SilverFx Pro fo BW conversion and local adjustments.

In my camera bag

At least one of my Nikon bodies ( D80, D700 or D800), a 50mm f1.4, storage cards and an extra battery.
