I took this photo behind the soccer field at UC Irvine. I heard about the Vermillion Flycatcher being there, so decided to check it out.Time
I believe it was taken in the early afternoon. It wasn't the best time of day, but it was the only time I could go.Lighting
Even thought it was bright lighting, i had the sun a little behind me. That helped a lot!Equipment
I have a Cannon 5D Mark III. I used a 100-400 mm lens, but to take this, I had to set it in the close up mode. I didn't have time to change to the 24-105 mm that I would normally use. The bird was flitting around to various areas, so the 100-400 lens was usually useful.Inspiration
I love taking photos of birds. I try to capture their actions and personalities. The Vermillion Flycatcher is a beautiful bird, and I was anxious to take the opportunity to photograph it.Editing
Yes, there was some simple post processing on my computer just to sharpen the lines a bit, Other than that, I seemed to have the right settings on my camera,In my camera bag
That all depends. I have a 50 foot tripod - I only take it if I am going about 50 feet. I have a lighter tripod for greater distances, but it doesn't have the features I like the most. If I am hiking, I usually just take a monopod, My camera and lens are are heavy! I also have a Cannon 24-105 wide angle lens that I keep with me, mostly for landscape photos. I also have a macro lens, which may not come along if I am going on a serious hike. Of course, I always keep an extra battery, cleaning cloth, and extra compact disks. Sometimes I find that rocks and tree stumps work better than the monopod for long hikes.Feedback
Patience!!! I waited a long time for this bird to arrive! One minute I was thinking that I may not see it at all, and the next 15 minutes, I enjoyed capturing it's true personality! If I know I am expecting a bird in a certain area, I take shots to check my settings before I see what I am looking for. It is so disappointing to have a gorgeous bird, and the wrong setting on the camera.
