Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a hot December day in Singapore at the historical Fort Canning Park. This was just one of the forts the British constructed when Singapore was a colony of the Crown. This was in one of the numerous tunnels that dotted the landscape.

Time

It was midday and we had probably spent about 2 or so hours around the park, taking photos around the area. We stumbled upon the tunnel and the light shining at the end gave me the idea for this shoot

Lighting

The small tunnel, with the light at the end, gave me the idea for this shoot. I wanted to get an epic pose and so positioned the subject right at the edge where the light came in, in order to catch the light on some parts of the costume while leaving the other areas dark.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D810, using a Sigma Art 35mm lens. Despite what people may think, this was taken

Inspiration

I love to watch movies and one scene that always gets me is when the protagonist steps out into the light on the way to some epic mission. I wanted to capture the same feel in this photo. Shay Cormac is the hero of Assassin's Creed: Unity and I thought it is especially appropriate for an assassin to be stepping out into the light as he proceeds on his mission.

Editing

All the post-processing was done in lightroom. I mostly did color balancing as well as dodging and burning certain parts of the photo so as to lighten up the subject and the darken the rest of the photo in order to have the subject stand out.

In my camera bag

Given that I specialize in portrait and cosplay photography, the two lenses that go into my bag first are my Sigma Art 35 f1.4 and the Nikon 85mm f1.4. My camera of choice is the Nikon D810, which works really well for this kind of low light conditions that I took the photo in. I also try to pack my Nikon SB700 flash at a minimum too to give me some flexibility in terms of providing a 2nd source of light.

Feedback

The bulk of the time in taking this photo was finding a way to position myself and the subject such that the subject loomed large in the frame of the door. The model was actually very small in relation to the door and I had to get her to spread her legs wide and take from an extremely low angle in order to give off the epicness of the character stepping out into the light. Post-processing was also very important to lighten up the subject as well as darken the frame so that the subject immediately jumps back at you when you look at the photo.
