Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a hotel room, and it was rather dumb luck that the curtains in the room added to the retro-style pin-up.

Time

It was taken at night.

Lighting

I used about three synced speed lights with various modifiers, mounted on light stands, to create the effect I was going for.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7000 with a TAMRON 18-270mm f 3.5-6.3 lens. The lens was at 65mm focal length and I shot this at f5 for 1/250s on 800 ISO. The speed lights were a mix of Nikon SB-900s and SB-800s.

Inspiration

I was asked to participate in a pinup shoot as an opportunity to expand my portfolio.

Editing

The post-processing was pretty simple. For the most part I just adjusted for contrast and tone.

In my camera bag

I have adjusted my equipment since I created this image. I now carry a Nikon D600 and D500 with a full assortment of prime and zoom lenses, however the one lens I use most is my Sigma 18-300mm f3.5-6.3. As for speed lights I now carry Flashpoint (aka Godox): Flashpoint Zoom Li-ion R2 TTL On-Camera Flash Speedlight - [Godox V860II]; Flashpoint eVOLV 200 TTL Modular Strobe with Built-in R2 2.4GHz Radio Remote System; and I use the R2Pro Trigger for Nikon to sync them. I also carry a great compliment of MagMod modifiers, including the MagBox which I now use quite a bit.

Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and explore new things. Try different styles of lighting, and you may find something you like.
