The photo was taken in Bali at lake Batur.Time
We had a crazy day trying to find as many waterfalls as possible in the jungles of Bali. Everything takes much longer than expected in Bali, especially when you get caught in monsoon rains in a Kijang (wannabe 4x4) up a one way muddy path. We were also due to start a sunrise hike of the largest volcano on the island which requires you to set off at midnight. Our idea was to drive to the foot of the volcano and get some rest before but we stumbled across Lake Batur on the way and couldn't miss the photo opportunity! This was taken just before dark which allowed for a long shutter to smooth things out.Lighting
I really wanted to capture the stillness of the lake, not only because it was so peaceful and calm around there but there were also no other people anywhere in sight. I felt very alone and it was calming. I wanted to portray this in the image. I waited until it was quite dark so I could keep the exposure up enough, but otherwise it was all natural light.Equipment
This was shot using a Fujifilm x100s using a travel tripod and remote shutter cable release.Inspiration
We were in a bit of a hurry to get to the volcano for as much sleep as possible before the hike but once we came across this lake it felt totally surreal and captivating. The urgency of getting somewhere vanished and the tranquility of the lake took over.Editing
This image really needed no editing... I did start to play with a few options but ended up using the original as it portrayed the feeling much better. In my camera bag
I travel very light and keep things simple. I have the x100s, a wide angle converter and lens, a travel tripod and a remote shutter cable release.Feedback
Timing is everything for a capture like this. Waiting for the light to be just right and the mist to settle... I also feel that the surroundings played a big part in this shot. I really felt the energy of where I was which helped "see" things this way.
