The photo was taken in Hershey Gardens' Butterflies House; this is definitely one of my favorite images. I'm terrified of any kind of insect, can't stand them, will run to the hills at the sight of one; yet my friend convinced me to visit this place and it was just breathtaking to see all those beautiful colors. I won't say I overcame my fear as I was shooting and panicking at the same time, but got me close enough to capture this magnificent creature.Time
I remember my friend and I barely made it to the Gardens as we got lost and stuck in traffic due to a Jimmy Buffet concert in Hershey Park Stadium! They closed at 5:00 pm, we made it there at 4:30 pm; so I'd say I shot this sometime between 4:45 - 4:50 pm on August 30, 2014.Lighting
Sadly no, I'm a self taught extremely amateur photographer, so I don't have any technique other than trying to position my equipment so that the capture looks as similar as possible like what I'm seeing with my eyes.Equipment
My fancy equipment was my handy dandy iPhone 5s, which is pretty much all the equipment I use for my pictures.Inspiration
There were butterflies flying all around us everywhere in the Butterflies House, yet this particular butterfly stood there very still without minding my proximity. I guess I was more afraid of it than the other way around; it almost felt like it was "posing" for me and you just can't let that opportunity pass.Editing
Not at all; I did take what felt like a gazillion shots and chose the best one in my opinion. No filters, no edits, no post-processing whatsoever. In my camera bag
Just my smartphones, preferably my iPhone 5s. I don't leave the house with the intention of shooting; I capture images as I feel them and feel inspired. Even if I'm just going for a run, if I see something and think "this could make a good shot", I'll stop, take the phone off my arm band and take the shot.Feedback
Be patient. These little critters won't necessarily work on your agenda, nor take directions on how to "pose", so I would say 1) make sure you have enough film or memory; 2) take as many shots as you feel comfortable with, even if you feel like you're just taking the same picture over and over again, something will be different; 3) have fun with it! Nothing is more rewarding than enjoying what you do, so make sure you're capturing because you feel inspired to, and not because you have to.
