Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Green Lakes State Park in Fayetteville, New York.

Time

My friend Nancy and I walk around the two lakes every Saturday morning at 8am, putting us at this point about 8:45am.

Lighting

This photo, interestingly, was taken in color..but a central New York winter does not have a lot of colors...so it is basically a black and white picture! The lack of sunlight through the clouds actually enhances the reflection of the trees in the water.

Equipment

Honestly, this picture was handheld and taken with my Droid 10mp cell phone! I have a great DSLR, an Olympus E510, with all the trimmings, but I don't always take it on my hikes. I took several exposures to use in postprocessing.

Inspiration

There is nothing quite like the beauty of freshly-fallen snow, and the bench all covered in snow was such a contrast to the usual bench-sitting scenario on a warm summer day by the lake. I felt the contrast of that along with the starkness of color was a shot that had something to say.

Editing

I took 3 differing exposures, which I can do with my type of cell phone. I then loaded those shots into Photomatix, for an HDR image. I then added a smoothing filter in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

I have an Olympus E510 DSLR camera with these lenses: 14-45mm, a 35mm macro, a 500mm telephoto, anHD wide-angle, along with several filters...

Feedback

To me, there are great shots everywhere... You just have to train your eye to see them and frame them well. Learning about what makes a scene intrinsically pleasing and doing your best to replicate the beauty you see is key. It helps to know what your equipment is capable of, but some photos just really speak. Learning about rule of thirds, etc. will help you understand why some shots speak to us more than others. Some photographers have a natural eye, but you can learn how to improve your composition, and choose scenes that speak. Lighting, composition, subject, etc. Can all be learned in classes you can take, even online: If you love photography, invest in learning more about you craft. It's absolutely fabulous to have a site like Viewbug where you can be inspired and challenged by others with a passion for photography.
