Behind The Lens

Location

This image was made in the Alhambra Palace, Granada, Spain... Just a beautiful Palace and place... Taken in late October early November.. The light is often softer this time of year..

Time

The trick with visiting the Alhambra, is to get in early ... book tickets for the first entry in the morning... we went in October / November so the light was still low at the time of opening, and we still had the warm autumn sun. If you can go twice, scout out the places... look for them... step round corners and think about it..

Lighting

Walk around the spaces and look for the fall of light... think about it and wait till it looks and feels right... sometimes come back in a few hours or longer.... Look to how the sun and natural light falls ... check times and direction of the light..

Equipment

I use Nikon cameras, on this occasion a D700... I dont like to use flash... and not often use tripods... Hand held and shallow breathing...

Inspiration

The place and space, the curves and the fall of light... all felt special and right..

Editing

Yes... I use Adobes Lightroom for all my post processing... for me this is an old fashioned darkroom set of tools made available on todays tech... I grew up in the old darkrooms.. I use Photoshop to add a watermark and do little else

In my camera bag

I currently use a Nikon D750, and a 10 - 24 mm Nikon lens and less often a 18 - 200 mm Nikon lens both with circular polorizar filters .. Also two 'frog' beanbags that act as padding in the bag and something sound and safe to rest the cam on for longer exposures. Spare batteries, cards, torch, a black sorrong, compass, cable ties, black tape, leatherman and business cards... and importantly a lens cleaning kit.. being outside much of the time often near the beach the filter gets covered in dust and sea spray..

Feedback

I trained as a fine art painter... I see things in terms of colour, light, form, and shape... I wait for the right time and right light.. my focus is looking at the interplay of light upon the subject and how it creates colour and form... I want to share the beauty of this world, both natural and man made
