Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on a super lap day at Knockhill Racing Circuit in Fife, Scotland

Time

It was around 2pm, I'd been around a few vantage points taking shots from different angles, speeds etc. Walked to this point and it's just near to where cars would enter the pit lane and slow down slightly. Took quite a lot of panning shots of various cars, trying slightly different shutter speeda and found this one just stood out amongst the rest.

Lighting

The lighting was quite bright as it was around 1-2pm in the afternoon, so I had a Circular Polarizer on and was trying to shoot at right angles to the sun, luckily this vantage point was almost spot on

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D7100 with a kit 18-55mm lens.

Inspiration

I'd always fancied doing some action car shots but had never found the time. This Sunday everything just clicked into place, tickets were bought and it turned out to be a nice sunny day. There were exhibition driving shows on this day and this helped to break up looking at all the cars whizzing past.

Editing

The raw file was put through DXO Optics 9, I find this the best one at the moment to bring out the detail and reduce any noise. A few tonal filters through NIK Color Efex and a vignette, then a quick gradient mask on the layer to cancel one side of the vignette so that it looks like it's moving into the lighter part

In my camera bag

Normally have a Nikon D7100, Sigma 18-35mm f1.8, Sigma 8-16mm and a Canon sx50HS for taking long range shots

Feedback

I think my advice would be to experiment with slightly different shutter speeds, and practice a lot of swivelling to mirror the motion of the car. Make sure you're pretty steady in your stance and get ready to anticipate the next car coming. Mostly though, if you don't get the shot the first time, don't worry, there'll be another car coming along in a minute
