Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Glamis motor show in Angus, Scotland

Time

It was taken around 1pm, after looking around all the different sections of motor vehicles. There was only one Mustang at the show and as it's one of my favourite cars, I couldn't help but take a few shots.

Lighting

The way the sun just after midday was hitting the chrome of the Mustang made it look so bright against the light blue metallic paint

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7100 with a Sigma 8mm lens

Inspiration

There were lots of cars throughout the show, but the American muscle cars always bring out a feeling that no others can. I was using an ultra wide angle lens and taking a low shot to give the car a more stunted appearance

Editing

As this was shot during the day, I vignetted the areas around the car to really make it appear as if it was coming out of the dark, there was a gradient mask applied to the right hand side to fade it to black. The contrast and clarity around the left headlamp were tweaked to make them sharper to compliment the more soft right side

In my camera bag

Right now I have an Olympus OMD EM10 Mk2 which I use now because it is a very light camera and captures amazing colours, normally it has a Samyang 12mm manual lens on it. Also I have a Sony A5000 as a backup camera with a 16mm Pancake lens. I also carry a Nikon P900 for very long range shots. I have a flash for the Olympus, a gorillapod, a Z bracket and numerous torches for light painting which using the Olympus Live composite mode is amazing to do

Feedback

I think the best advice is to take shots from different heights and with totally different lenses (eg UWA and Telezoom). Look at the way the sun is hitting the chrome on older vehicles and also the backgrounds and try to get angles where people aren't visible if at a very busy event. Watch what others are doing and do something different can also be a great way to work. You normally get the best shots from vehicles you really identify with so search out the machines that you really like and have fun making them look even better than they are.
