Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at a park in Japan. I usually visit this place because of its peaceful ambiance and its great offering for a lot of photo subjects.

Time

It was during the summer season when I had this photo taken. It was a hot, but gloomy Saturday late afternoon. An off from the busy week at work. I remember planning the visit to this park for one week. And I finally got the chance to enjoy some time for myself, and feast on some relaxing sceneries.

Lighting

In this photo, I wanted to reflect the feeling of being alone in a very nice place. Alone, but not lonely. So, I found it great that the natural light was not very bright at that time. I was using a smartphone, and I had no application to do complicated modification of the setting or lighting back then. But since it was an outdoor shoot, the use of natural light on a late afternoon was a good idea for the subject, I guess. Nowadays, you can usually modify the lighting during the post-processing.

Equipment

I'm not a professional photographer, but who doesn't like taking photos anyway? The photo was shot using a smartphone. It was a Galaxy Note 3. No modification of the setting and I took it without using a tripod.

Inspiration

Late afternoon of a hot Saturday. You could count the number of people at that time, and most of them were doing things that you can usually see in a park. Nothing extraordinary. I couldn't have a good subject, but there was an urge for me to take some shots. I wanted to express how I am feeling at the moment, so I was looking for a person who's alone. But I've read some articles that in Japan, you cannot simply point a camera to a person and shoot without the consent or something like that. I am a foreigner, and it's not the best thing to be troubled on your supposedly alone time. Anyway, I was sitting on a bench, and my bicycle was parked in front of me. At that time, I realized that it was my only companion not just in that park, but also in that country – a place that is so new to me. So, I wanted to make a remembrance of it as my best buddy.

Editing

The post-processing I made was editing the composition by cropping some parts of the photo. I also adjusted the lighting by turning it more into a black and white photo, so I could show the gloominess of the scene.

In my camera bag

Since I'm a hobbyist, and I enjoy phone photography, I always have my smartphones ready with me. It's nice because I can easily take the shots anytime, anywhere with lesser equipment. I just make sure that the memory space is always enough when I'm out for taking photos.

Feedback

Parks and other places where nature is present will always be a perfect place to take your camera to. The composition is very important to put your perspective on your audience. Natural lighting is also always a very good choice, but I think we should not be afraid of using some post-processing or little lighting adjustments to enhance our shots. On another note, it really doesn't matter where you are or what time of the day it is when taking photos. For me, the most important thing in taking photos is being able to express your thoughts or feelings and transform them into a visual experience to those who will see your shots. If you could bring your audience to where you are or make them feel what you are feeling by using your photos, I think you are successful in conveying your arts to them.
