Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken out the window of our RV doing 60mph heading east on the I40 towards Amarillo Texas.

Time

We’d been driving all day trying to make it to Amarillo before nightfall. My wife loves to drive so I take every opportunity to take photos along the way, when this lonesome windmill stood tall at dusk against the sunburned clouds.

Lighting

The golden hours of dusk and dawn, you can’t beat the intensity and drama of the natural light.

Equipment

Trusty old Nikon d5100.

Inspiration

The Heartland of America presents mile after mile of inspiration down every road and highway across the country, how can you not be inspired?

Editing

This is a simple jpeg with a heavy vivid setting. The original shot was in landscape but contained unwanted clutter, when cropped to portrait it came alive. Some minor contrast adjustments to really define the clouds.

In my camera bag

Upgraded to a d7200, but sometimes I really miss the simplicity of my old d5100. I mainly carry a Tokina 11-16mm and a Nikko 18-200mm

Feedback

I love taking photos on the open road. Early morning or late afternoons can be the best time to travel and will always throw the best light. Have your partner do the driving and have your camera at the ready!
