Great shot I really like the way you used the tree to block out most of the harsh light from the sun.

Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken just outside of the small country town of Killarney, South East Queensland, Australia.

Time

It was around 6:30am during the "Golden Hour". The early morning fog was just starting to lift to reveal a beautiful day.

Lighting

I like to use natural lighting and manoeuvre myself around to take full advantage. In this shot I had a large depth of field focusing on the trunk immediately in front of me, but with the suns rays glistening through the leaves in the background, your eye is first drawn there. You can then explore the rest of the photo, the fog lifting behind the cows, the scattered clouds revealing a blue sky, the perspective formed by the shadows of the tree and the fence post, and the mountain range in the background.

Equipment

Nikon D5100 18-200mm lens @ 18mm, hand held.

Inspiration

I primarily shoot landscapes and things of interest. I like to look at what is in front of me and figure out how to frame it so that it tells a story or highlights an item of interest in the otherwise mundane surroundings. Farms are fantastic for finding interesting subjects to shoot particularly in the early mornings and late afternoon.

Editing

I don't have time for heavy editing so usually most of my editing is minor adjustments in Lightroom. For this shot I pulled some shadow from the foreground to highlight the tree trunk and sharpened the photo overall.

In my camera bag

Honestly, as purely a hobby photographer of intermediate skill, the Nikon D5100 was a great camera. I have since progressed to a D7200 which is a phenomenal camera, but I also now carry a D5500 as a lightweight alternative. I just leave the 18-55mm on the D5500 for convenience when I'm just shooting for fun. When planning a shoot or when I know I'll be in situation where a photo opportunity may arise, I'll have my D7200 with Nikon DX18-200mm, Tokina 12-28mm for wide angle shots, and a Nikon 35mm prime lens for indoors or low light.

Feedback

The harsh light of the Australian bush can be tricky in the middle of the day. To capture its full beauty and colour, shooting during the golden hours will get you the best results. The Browns, Yellow and Green come to life and the sky is a rich blue without being washed out. Move around to manipulate the natural light, don't be afraid of shooting into the light, this is when I get some of my best shots. I got this shot on my second attempt, just waited for the sun to peak through the trees at the right moment.
