Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the river in my hometown of Kamloops. Some of my fondest memories as a kid was spending summer evenings out on the boat staying out till the last drop of light was gone and we were forced to call it quits for the night.

Time

There are two things I absolutely adore, hot summer nights and sunsets. I never get tired of either which is why I probably still like this photo, that I shot during a hot August sunset, after all these years.

Lighting

I am drawn to sunsets, I don't know why but I love them and I could shoot them every day. I shot this more for the sunset than the wakeboarder. I made the wakeboarder a silhouette so that I would get the full impact of the sunset.

Equipment

I took this photo so long ago that to be honest I can't even say for sure what camera was used.

Inspiration

I love sunsets, wakeboarding and making good memories. Taking a photo is the only way to freeze that moment, that good memory and keep in fresh in your mind. Memories fade but a photo helps them last longer.

Editing

There isn't much in the way of post-processing for this photo. Just took it through lightroom and added a little contrast.

In my camera bag

The equipment in my bag has changed a lot since I took this photo. I shoot with a canon 5D mark III and I am never without my canon 24-70 2.8 which is my go to lens. I also always make sure I have my 16-24 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 on me. I also carry around a video light which is something that I learned from an instructor at school. I have a speedlite and you can do awesome things with them but for low light situations that you need something in a hurry the video light is your friend.

Feedback

For a photo like this you are going to want to expose for the sunset but also to remember that you are dealing with motion as well so you need that shutter speed up. Don't be afraid of a little grain if you have to bump your ISO to get the right shutter speed and aperture combination to make the picture work!
