Behind The Lens

Location

The image was captured in a downtown L.A. studio I rented for a few hours one morning. It's called FD Photo Studio, and has amazing stages to shoot in.

Time

This shot was one of the last of the day. I was shooting a few pieces for the social media pages of the company that provided the lingerie. We finished early and started experimenting with some lighting techniques I hadn't tried yet. I got quite a few really great shots, but this was one of my favorites.

Lighting

Accidents can be good things. I was shooting with a 22" beauty dish with a 10 degree grid over the front, and the diffusion sock. I aimed it just behind the model in order to achieve a silhouetted look. The light had a leak where the dish mounted to the strobe and gave the flare against the CYC wall that helped accentuate the angle of her legs.

Equipment

I shot this with a Canon 6D tethered to Phase One Capture One, hand held, with an 85mm f/1.4. I don't remember the exact settings, but the Alien Bees 1600 was set to full power with a 22" beauty dish (white reflector inside) with a 10 degree grid and a diffusion sock.

Inspiration

My inspiration came from a style of lighting I had previously seen on social media and I was trying to achieve the same effect. I consider this a success. I am naturally drawn to dramatic lighting and this, to me, is a great dramatic effect that I fell in love with and love doing it over and over.

Editing

The only post processing I did was basic skin retouching. The shot was great as it came out of the camera and through Capture One. I slightly raised the contrast once I turned it black and white, just to make the shadows a bit more dramatic.

In my camera bag

My 6D is always in my bag. With it, I carry the essentials: Canon 85mm f/1.4, Sigma 50mm f/1.4, and my go-to macro, Canon 100mm f/2.8.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to experiment. Always be willing to try new things and get inspired by your own work, either good or bad, and by the work of others. Take in all the good and work with it to make something that is yours.
