I had a piece of black cardboard as my backing. A wooden skewer poked through it being held in place with blue tack and a chili stuck on the other side. I used a incense sticks to create the smoke from underneath the chillis - it does great things. And my kids sat on the table holding a torch each chasing the smoke to highlight it as it wasn't showing up in my shots. Then I tweaked it in photoshop to bring out the blue colour. Lots of stuffing around and lots of fun for only a small cost. Sorry about the late reply. Better late than never!
