I took this photo at Fall Creek Falls State Park in middle Tennessee which is a five hour drive from my home.Time
The light was going to be optimal early in the morning. Since it was a five hour drive away, I had to leave at three o'clock in the morning.Lighting
I knew the falls would look awesome if there was some fog hanging around the top. So I kept watching the temperature and dewpoint for the park and when I saw that they were within five degrees of each other I planned on making the trip. I wish there had been more water flow at the time, it is pretty hard to get all conditions right at the same time.Equipment
I was using a Canon XSi with a Canon 15-85mm lens on an Indura tripod.Inspiration
I had been shooting waterfalls for several years in eastern TN and started looking at waterfalls a little further away. There are a lot of beautiful waterfalls in middle Tennessee and Fall Creek Falls is one of the more magnificent. I researched the photographs of that waterfall to see when and how I wanted to shoot it for the best effect.Editing
I took this photo six years ago so I don't remember exactly what I used to edit it. I believe I pulled it into Lightroom to do some basic editing, then brought it into Photoshop to crop, eliminate any defects, then make some final color adjustments, and finally add some sharpening.In my camera bag
At that time six years ago I carried the Canon XSi C;anon 15-85mm lens; Canon 70-200mm lens; circular polarizer for each lens; ND filters for each lens; a cleaning cloth; a dust blower; a filter removal tool; and a rain hood for the camera/lens.Feedback
First, determine what conditions you want to take a photo in. Then watch the weather (dew point and temperature within 5 degrees good chance of fog) and look at the sun direction using something like The Photographers Ephemeris. Do as much planning as you can before you head out for a shoot. Double check that you have enough charged batteries and extra memory cards!
